Moving House Our Way!
We understand that moving house is never an easy task; trying to organise your belongings to be moved from one location to another can be very exhausting and time-consuming. To help keep those stress levels at a minimum, here are 7 tips to ensure your move is plain sailing.
1. Select a moving date carefully
This will all depend on how your sale or purchase is progressing, but do keep in mind peak times such as Bank Holidays, Fridays or end of a school term.
2. Research your removal company early
You don’t need to go with the first removal company you find. Take the time to make sure they suit your needs, timescale and most importantly your budget. Do they have great reviews? Will you be doing the packing yourself, or will they be packing everything for you? Do your research and don’t be afraid to ask all the questions you need. Remember, they will be handling a lot of your personal belongings, so it needs to be right. We also recommend asking them to scope out your new address to avoid any potential issues with them being able to park on the day.

3. Pack things in order
Label boxes accordingly so that unpacking will be a breeze and also helps the movers know where in your new house each box goes. It’s always good to remember to pack an emergency box with tea, coffee, snacks, mugs and a kettle so when you get to the property you can make yourself a well-deserved cuppa!
Closer to the day, pack a bag as if you were going on a weekend break. Create a checklist of all your personal belongings beforehand, such as charging cords, wallet, laptop, passport, keys, toiletries and a few spare clothes. Do you have any sentimental belongings you don’t want to lose sight off? Carry those with you. This will ensure you have all your needed items with you and gives you one less thing to think about on the day.
4. Disassemble furniture before the big day!
Trust us, you do not want to be struggling to take apart furniture when the removal vans arrive. Try and disassemble any bulky furniture which you will struggle to
get out your door before then, this will save a lot of stress and
keep your doorway clear.
5. Make sure your new home is insured
Once you know the details of your new home, you can get insurance up to 30 days in advance and schedule it to start the day you pick up the keys. One less thing to worry about!
6. Make a running list of people you need to notify of your change of address
Here are a few important ones:
• The Post Office
• Insurance Providers
• Bank & Credit Card Company
• Utility Providers
• Loan Providers
• Magazine and Subscription Services
• Online Shopping Sites
• Health – Doctor, Optician, Vet, Dentist
• Motoring – DVLA, Vehicle Registration, Breakdown Cover
• Pet Microchipping
• Government – Local Council, Electoral Register, HMRC/Inland Revenue
• Friends and Family
7. On the BIG day!
• Remember to turn off any appliances that are being left.
• Take final meter readings.
• Have one final look around the property and check you haven’t forgotten anything.
• Don’t forget to breathe! These are exciting times ahead, with new surroundings and things to discover. It’s time for that fresh start!
