If you’re thinking about moving to Telford, then you might be wondering what it’s actually like to live here. Created in the 1960s by merging several smaller towns, Telford is a vibrant and lively city that is perfect for people from all walks of life. So no matter whether you’re a growing family, a single professional or looking to downsize, you’re bound to find somewhere that suits you.

Read on for our top 5 reasons why we love Telford and what makes it such a great place to live.

1. Things to do

The first reason why we think Telford is a great place to live is that you’ll always find something for the whole family to enjoy. From great eateries and shopping facilities to cinemas and bowling, the town centre is filled with everything you need for a fun day out at the weekend. If you fancy something a little different, then head to the local ice rink, dry ski slope and free BMX trail parks

For those who like to get out and explore, the surrounding area is full of stunning countryside walks and cycling tracks. Hike up The Wrekin and take in the expansive views out over Shropshire, or drive over to Attingham Park for a woodland walk with the deer.

Interested in history? The Ironbridge area is filled with museums of all kinds, including the open-air Blists Hill Victorian Museum where you can fully immerse yourself in history. While there, make sure to visit the actual Iron Bridge, the world’s first bridge constructed of iron and a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Whatever your interests, there’s a long list of must-visit places in Shropshire and Telford for you to discover. With so much to see and do, you’ll soon find out why Shropshire is a great place to live!

2. Lifestyle

With everything you need on your doorstep, it comes as no surprise that Telford was named one of the top 10 happiest places to live in the UK! If you fancy a day out in the city or are looking to commute for work, then there are three train stations located in Wellington, Oakengates and Telford Central for direct access to Birmingham. Looking to keep fit? Stop off at one of the many public swimming pools and gyms, or relax with a book in one of the libraries.

There are also several crime prevention initiatives in place, including Safer Telford. Working alongside the West Mercia police, this initiative encourages local communities to come together and tackle crime, helping to make sure Telford remains a safe and happy place to live.

3. Education

Whichever area of Telford you’re interested in, there’s a primary or secondary school waiting to welcome your children. There are 12 secondary schools and over 40 primary schools, and with that much choice, you’re sure to find somewhere that’s a good fit for your family. The Thomas Telford School and Newdale Primary School & Nursery have both been rated Outstanding by Ofsted, along with The Bridge SEN School

For older and mature students, there’s also the University Centre Telford which is part of the University of Wolverhampton. Offering a number of courses and distance learning, the centre also delivers workshops and qualifications classed as Continued Professional Development (CPD).

So whether you have children in nursery or your own thirst for knowledge, Telford has a number of great facilities for lifelong learning.

4. Property

Since Telford has so many unique areas, this means that there’s an abundance of different property types available. From apartments and townhouses to both period and modern properties, there’s a property for every taste and style. Plus, as of December 2021, the average price for semi-detached houses in Telford was actually £24,176 less than the national average. This means that if you’re thinking about moving to Shropshire from the big city, Telford is an ideal place when it comes to finding affordable and spacious properties.

If you’re looking for a new build in particular, then Lawley is an up and coming area that’s still under development. Due to be completed in 2027, there will be over 3,500 new homes with access to local amenities and surrounded by plenty of green space.
